You Have To Get In The Ring, That's What Matters Most!

Syd Vanderpool recommended  I check out a website called RossBoxing.com, I might like what he has to say and I might learn a thing or two and I did just that.  Not only about training and exercises, but about boxing too.

I’ve been boxing since 2012 and I never claimed to know it all, far from it, but today I read a few of his blogs and it made me think of this sport in a whole new light.  In one blog he wrote about Emanuel Steward, Emanuel said, “ “I believe in a lot of boxing.  You can train and work on the speed bag and heavy bag, but when you get in the ring with another fighter, it’s a different story” and it made me realize how true that is.  If you want to be the best boxer you can be you have to be in that ring hitting pads, and sparring with people, not just hitting the speed ball or on the heavy bags.  But that could also be said for just about anything.  Weight training, dancing, singing, etc., you have to put the time into it, you can’t half ass it otherwise you’ll always be just good enough.

Another blog I read had to do with exercises and excuses, and how you really have no excuse to not exercise even in your own home.  I loved it so much I had to share it on my trainers Facebook page.  Ross showed us how you can do different kinds of exercises in your own home with everyday household items.  For example, he used a desk chair (with wheels), a lawn mower, a snowboard during the winter, and did rollouts

He skipped inside his home, out in the snow, in his garage, anywhere, skipping doesn’t take up that much room and most rooms have high enough ceilings that you won’t hit anything.   Many people will say they can’t work out because they can’t afford a gym membership or they can’t afford to buy equipment, or there’s no room, well after seeing this I can honestly say that is not true.  We just need to think out of the box a little and have fun with our exercises and not be afraid to use things we have.  I know I will be implementing using the tools and equipment we have at the gym as well as our own bodies in my classes.

I love his final comment in this blog, I have to add it here:

“Excuses are the nails used to build the house of failure.”

BBSV's Profile of a Champion- Shelley Cowie

BBSV Profile – Shelley Cowie

It’s often believed that we can be our own worst critics, and that’s just what Shelley Cowie says was one of the toughest hurdles to overcome on her journey to a fitter, healthier self.

Thirty-eight year old Shelley, a working mother to two young girls, Heyden and Logan, often battled the self-doubt her mind would cast as she began what she calls her “weight loss process.” Now Shelley says she’s the healthiest she’s ever been, and it’s due to her training with the Boxing by Syd Vanderpool (BBSV) team. “I feel strong, powerful and athletic for the first time in 15 years,” she explains. “At BBSV I am surrounded by people who believe in me, people who would never let me quit, even when I wanted to.”

Getting called into trainer Syd Vanderpool’s office in late 2011 is what ramped up Shelley’s fitness routine. “Syd brought me in to show me an email from another gym – they had a female boxer interested in fighting in the Golden Gloves. I had always wanted to be in a real boxing match and Syd knew that, so I figured ‘why not?’” When asked what advice she might share with other busy moms thinking of tackling their own fitness goals, Shelley says it’s making the commitment to herself and her health that’s made a major difference. “You have to commit the time, plan it, schedule it and stick to it. I decided it was time for me to be selfish – this was my time! My fight was on my bucket list and I was going to do it!”

Since that day in October, Shelley has been training with the support of both her families: her husband and children, and her “fitness family” at Boxing by Syd Vanderpool. It’s this support system that has gotten her through some tough times, even those personal challenges like dealing with the passing of her mom.

Now, just seven months later, Shelley has reached her weight-loss goal and hit well below what was to be her fighting weight. She’s now working toward her next fitness milestone: to weigh 170lbs. and participate in a 5km mud obstacle course in September.

Looking back on her progress Shelley says the most gratifying part of her journey has been the impact it’s had on her children. “When Heyden wraps her arms around me on a daily basis, because now she can, she tells me how proud she is of me. I realize that the example I am setting for my girls is life-changing for them too.”

Fight For Your Cause

On June 12, 2011, Boxing by Syd Vanderpool’s Destiny fighters got in the ring at the Delta Hotel in Kitchener to show the Kitchener-Waterloo community that there is more to being a boxer than just getting in the ring and smacking people around.

After eight weeks of intensive training with their team of professionals at the Boxing by Syd Vanderpool Athletic Centre, these boxers raised more than $6,500.00 for local charities in pledges alone. They also delighted the crowd at the charity gala with their exhibition matches in honour of their charity of choice! With percentages of ticket sales and the silent auction items being added to the total, the evening at the Delta raised a total of $9, 018.04.

Our Athletes on the Move

On Saturday June 18, 2011, Boxing by Syd’s very own Michael “The Flash”

Walchuk competed as the spectacular main event in Buffalo, NY against hometown boy Nick “Machine Gun” Brinson.

Here’s what TheBoxingExaminer.com had to say about the fight:

In a spectacular Main Event of the evening Nick ‘Machine Gun’ Brinson, 8-1-1, 5KO’s of Geneva, New York defeated Michael ‘The Flash’ Walchuk, 9-4, 2KO’s of Kitchener, Ontario by a majority decision in an eight round war for the vacant New York State Middleweight title.

Even though he lost, Walchuk is an exciting fighter and definitely worth the price of admission to watch.

Great fight, Flash! Way to make us proud!

That same night, another Boxing by Syd athlete took to the ring. Julius “Caesar” Bunda had an impressive showing as he faced off against Tony “All In” Brinson of Geneva, New York.

Here’s what TheBoxingExaminer.com had to say about Bunda’s fight:

“Bunda came out aggressively at the opening bell and was able to score early, however by the mid point of the round Brinson found his rhythm and landed hard combinations to the head and body that stunned Bunda and had him off balance and holding on.

Bunda is a deceptively hard puncher and in the second half of the round he was able to find his range and landed hard combinations to the head and body that slowed Brinson’s punch output and had him stunned as well as holding on.

Judge Eric Marlinski saw [the score] 38-38, while judges Terry Beecher-Johnson and Don Ackerman saw it 39-37 both for Bunda, now 4-1, 2 KOs, while Brinson loses his first bout and goes to 2-1.”

How the Get Fit Challenge Saved My Life

Colin Fawcett - Lost 25 pounds in 12 weeks with the Get Fit Challenge

The Get Fit Challenge was designed to help people reach their weight loss goals through an intense, 12-Week training regime, which includes a boxing component.

Here is a testimonials from Robert and Patricia Reeves, who have both had huge success by joining the 12-Week Get Fit Challenge:

"My husband and I have had the pleasure of participating in the Get Fit 12-Week Challenge. The trainers are extremely professional, motivating, hard working, knowledgeable and provided us with a varied and interesting program that meets both of our work-out needs and goals. Our workouts are intense, but the results in terms of physical conditioning and increased energy levels have been remarkable. I would highly recommend the Get Fit Challenge to anyone who is serious about improving their overall health, energy levels and physical strength. Together we have lost over 50lbs. We plan on doing another 12 to 24 weeks in this program to maintain and exceed the results we've achieved."

Erika Gmeindl- Trainer
"Been there, did that, doing it...right!"

“I was fat all through grade school, and life was hard and lonely for a long time.”
Feeling out of shape and isolated was the motivation behind Erika kick‐startng her fitness goals. Stereotyped because of how she looked, Erika began with small day‐to‐day changes, reading health magazines and making smarter food choices. From there, it was a tough but meaningful journey to become the person she is today that is 65 lbs lighter than when she started her journey in health.
In the years since, Erika has pushed forward and on to lifting weights so that she could “feel her muscles the next day,”which she says was a constant reminder of how hard she was working. It’ this positive atitude, and her personal experiences, that helped shape Erika’ career goals.
Specializing in weight loss and toning, Erika is a certified personal trainer, and Pilates and spinning instructor.
As the newest member of the Boxing by Syd Vanderpool team, Erika focuses on bringing a holistic approach to fitness and uses exercise as a way to correct imbalances in the body. Most recently, she’ spent time building up her knowledge in performance‐based training, hoping to shed a different light on fitness for her clients. “ exercise to make myself stronger, faster, smarter and more stable, rather than workout to make myself look a different way,”she adds, reflectng the true purpose behind performance‐based training. “that’s the mindset I want for my clients too.”Erika says she regularly reminds people to be patient and kind to themselves, something she once had to tell herself often. “ want my clients to understand that weight loss that sticks doesn’t happen overnight. You need time to develop habits to sustain a healthy weight, and I’m here to help every step of the way."
